Acequia – what´s that?
Acequia is an Arabian word which finds its roots back in the time when Andalucía was part of the Moorish empire. The word means irrigation channel.
We are lucky to have an Acequia that runs cross our land. It runs parallel to the river and was once dug out in the riverbank to form an irrigating channel for the cultivated land in the valley. Even today the Acequia is being used by us and our neighbours in the valley to make sure that our kitchen gardens are provided with water during the dry summer. Between May and October water from the river is steered into the Acequia.
We find the Acequia a true gift; it enriches us with the possibility to cultivate the land, and the soothing purl from the stream. The whole is characterized by this water channel, and therefore we let it give name to our house – Casa Acequia.
